The article reports on the case of a 52-year-old non-smoking atopic woman, who worked at the University Institute of Zoology as an animal attendant. She cared for a large number of different animals, including cockroaches, used for teaching neuroanatomy. The cockroaches were a particular species. She had been exposed to them for about years when she started to develop immediate skin symptoms, such as pruritus, and redness, after skin contact. When cleaning their cages, she picked them up with her bare hands. During this. they, as a defensive measure released saliva on to her hands, which caused immediate rednesss, whealing and pruritus on contact. She also had similar immediate skin reactions on her eyelids. |
