The essay considers how shrine books, seventeenth-century books written in France after the religious wars of 1562-1598 and 1620-1629 to establish and detail the holiness and the marvelous occurring in Catholic religious areas as a result of prayers, liturgy, and processions, helped reinforce Catholic religious beliefs and establish religious archives. Works considered include one on the shrine of Notre-Dame de Betharram in the Pyrenees by lawyer turned bishop Pierre de Marca, the book on the shrine of Notre-Dame de Liesse by J. de Saint-Pères, and one on the shrine at the Notre-Dame de Garaison written by Pierre Geoffroy. |
