Abstrakt: A representative sample of the U.S. population was asked during early September 1973, if they themselves happen to attend church in the last seven days. They were asked about their religious preference - Protestant, Roman Catholic or Jewish. Answers were classified into "Eastern Orthodox," "other," or "none" in addition to the three categories mentioned in the question, though "Eastern Orthodox" and "other" were left out of this analysis. The Protestant category was subdivided into Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and "other." This survey was conducted by the Gallup Organization. Computer tabulations of the data were obtained from the Roper Public Opinion Research Center at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Categories with totals of nine or less were eliminated from analysis. The number of persons indicating a preference for each of the above-named religious categories by size of community was computed. For each size of city, the number having a preference for the Roman Catholic church was known. For each size of city and each religious category within that city size the percentage who attended church in the last week was figured.
