Elementary literacy is regarded as one of the key competencies necessary for further development of children. Contemporary concepts of elementary reading and writing in Slovakia have quality textbooks at their disposal and these textbooks compete with each other in the best sense of the word. However, it is possible and desired to enrich them with activities employing modern approaches to teaching. The author suggests that the use of information and communications technology is a prospective way which could enrich but - and it is important to emphasize - not replace teaching elementary reading and writing. The paper, except theoretical elaboration of the topic, brings also basic findings of the experimental verification of teaching elementary reading and writing at 1st grade of elementary school based on activities on interactive whiteboard. Based on the research findings it is possible to state out that these activities increase motivation character of education and make it easier for pupils to master (for them often very complicated) processes of elementary reading and writing.
