Long-term topical treatment of skin diseases favors the induction of contact sensitization to substances present in topical medicaments, such as antimicrobials, preservatives, vehicles and corticosteroids. Systemic use of the same compound can elicit systemic contact dermatitis, and corticosteroids are no exception. The article presents a case of a 40-year-old automobile mechanic who developed acute eczema of the nostrils, upper lip and cheeks. The patient became topically sensitized to neomycin and hydrocortisone in the eardrops that he used for years. |
