Abstrakt: The article focuses on the 1595-1605 English and Latin case notes of a Doctor Barker of Shrewsbury kept at the British Library's Sloan Manuscripts which show that the Earl of Shrewsbury, William Herbert, third earl of Pembroke, has sought treatment for melancholy when he was in his mid-20s. Topics discussed include the symptoms shown by higher class patients categorized as melancholy in the medical manuscripts from the period and the evidence that the doctor referred to was William Barker.
