The article presents a case of contact allergy caused due to benzyl alcohol and benzyl paraben. Benzyl alcohol is commonly present in natural products as well as synthesized as a solvent and preservative. Usually cross-reactions between all five parabens in the patch test mix are seen. The patch test reaction to paraben mix is not dependent on paraben allergy at all, because there were no positive reactions to methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl parabens or to p-hydroxybenzoic acid. |
