Factors associated with antenatal care bookings among pregnant women in Tshwane Health District, South Africa.

Abstrakt: The antenatal period is an important opportunity for reaching pregnant women with several interventions important for the health and well-being of both the mother and the unborn child. The purpose of the study was to investigate the determinants of antenatal care booking among pregnant women in the Tshwane Health District, Gauteng Province. The study was a quantitative, descriptive study that was conducted among 320 pregnant women. A pretested, structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data was collected on socio-demographic and obstetric issues. A logistic regression analysis was carried out to describe the determinants of timing for ANC booking. A total of 320 questionnaires were administered to the pregnant women attending Kgabo Community Health Care for their first booking at antenatal care. The mean age of participants was 25.3 years with a range of 14-45 years. The majority (88%) of the participants had a secondary level or higher education. About 22.5% of the participants were <20 years old and 77.5% were ≤ 20 years. Only 22.5% of the participants were married. The majority of participants were not employed (69.5%).
