Abstrakt: Since the end of the 1990ies up to nowadays, in a number of Russian and Polish theatre plays by prominent authors (Bajer, Walczak, Stasiuk - Razumovskaja, Sigarev and others) names are more foregrounded, submitted to change and functionalized than ever before. This concerns the names in the list of characters and the names - forenames, nicknames etc. - within dramatic action. More than ever before, naming and renaming is metatextually topicalized. Next to traditional anthropomorphic names, there are non-anthropomorphic names taken from different contexts - geography, fauna, the new media etc. The main function of naming and renaming is sounding out of the characters' mode of being and existential feeling in actual - mainly social - reality. While some of the polish plays are situated in international frames of life and, when placed in Poland, show disruption in social life, most of the Russian plays - directly or indirectly - bring up the problem of national identity and social-political orientation, disorientation respectively.
