Abstrakt: The article presents the author's views on the shifted interest of Portugal Empire towards the Gulf of Guinea after ascension to the throne of King José I and the seizure of power by his minister Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo. Various topics discussed include international competition in the Atlantic Region, strategic benefits of archipelago, increased demand of slave trade, 1778 Pardo Treaty signed by Portugal government, Portuguese diplomacy and economic interest of Spain and Portugal in the region.
