Abstrakt: Standard Operating Protocols (SOP) are the written guidelines that guide the performance of any procedure methodically to reduce the errors. These are also helpful for newly recruited health care providers to perform their expected services logically in any set up. The objective of this study was to develop SOP for Endotracheal suctioning for the nurses working in intensive care unit of a tertiary care centre. A preliminary draft of the protocol was developed by reviewing the relevant literature. Current practices of staff nurses were also observed. Focus group discussions sessions were conducted to assess the problems faced by them and to seek their suggestions to overcome these problems while performing the procedure. Four Delphi rounds amongst the experts were conducted to validate the protocol following which Content Validity Index (CVI) was calculated. For each item of the protocol the Content Validity Index (CVI) was 100%. Nurses were demonstrated the procedures as per developed SOP. Following this, 20 observations were recorded using an observational checklist. The internal consistency and reliability of checklist were calculated using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. The Cronbach's Alpha of the checklist of protocol was 0.81. The present study has thus provided a protocol that is valid, feasible, acceptable with internally consistent checklist. The staff nurses stated that protocol is beneficial for them to update their knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
