Brief Background To identify the current status of periodontal treatment and the referral patterns of patients to Periodontists in a cohort of general dental practitioners in a semi-urban region of Kerala. Material Cross-sectional study among general dental practitioners in and around Kothamangalam, a semi-urban region of Kerala. A questionnaire survey was carried out among 100 general dentists to identify the current status of periodontal treatment and the referral patterns of patients to Periodontists. For each question, independent percentage was calculated to determine the frequency of the responses. Results Basic periodontal treatment by scaling is provided in all the clinics. No regular patterns of consultation/referral to Periodontists exist in most practices. Most of the general practitioners are unaware of root coverage procedures. Summary and Conclusions Majority of periodontal patients are treated in the general practice set-up in the country. More efforts are needed to sensitize the general practitioners regarding the advanced treatment options available for periodontal patients that are routinely carried out by Periodontists.
