The presented work was aimed to describe the corrosion ressitance and mechanical properties of some sintered iron-based P/M materials subjected to a thermochemical treatment - carburizing in fluidized bed. The analyzed specimens were produced by powder metallurgy (P/M) route. The specimens analyzed in this study were obtained from atomised iron powders of different sizes (< 45, 45-63, 63-100, 100-150, >150 µm). The powders were compressed in a mold using uniaxial pressing at a pressure of 600 MPa. The compacts were sintered at 1.150°C with the sintering time of 60 minutes and then subjected to carburizing in fluidized bed at 930°C for 45 minutes. The corrosion behaviour of samples was studied using potentiodynamic polarization analysis. 3.5% NaCl is the corrosion media used in this investigation. Electrochemical techniques was used to investigate the corrosion behaviour of treated and untreated specimens. After the extrapolation of the Tafel plots, parameters like icorr, anodic (β a) and cathodic (βc) were analyzed. The results of the measurements revealed that the thermochemical treatment have a detrimental effect on the corrosion rate of iron-based P/M materials. Also, the mechanical properties of treated and untreated specimens were analyzed. A relation between the mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance was concluded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
