We describe the case of a 38-year-old man, with a 23-year history of anorexia nervosa, who developed severe osteoporosis which was discovered when he presented with a spontaneous crush fracture of his first lumbar vertebra. This case demonstrates the need to consider osteoporosis as a potential complication of chronic anorexia nervosa in male as well as female patients. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. and Eating Disorders Association.
