Abstrakt: This article focuses on cutaneous melanomas in domestic animals. Melanomas were recognized in ancient times and have been found in mummies of people who lived more than 2,000 years ago. Melanomas arise from melanoblasts and melanocytes, which are cells capable of forming melanin and embryologically are derived from the neural crest. Most melanoblasts reach the epidermis, maturing there into melanocyte. In man about 85 % of the malignant melanomas originate in the skin and constitute 5% of all skin cancers.
