An essay is presented concerning the significance of religious identities in diplomatic efforts between New France and Massachusetts during and following the Acadian Civil War in the mid-17th century. It examines a dispute between French governors Charles de Menou d'Aulnay and Charles de Saint-Etienne de la Tour, religious arguments in diplomatic negotiations with Massachusetts, and public opinion in Massachusetts regarding concern among Puritans over the possible advancement of Catholicism. |
