The relationship between percent black and occupational differentiation has been examined in a substantial body of literature. Most of this research, however, has focused on major urban centers. Smaller places in rural settings have been almost entirely overlooked in these investigations; nor has most research examined effects of community characteristics on race-linked occupational differentiation. In the present inquiry we concentrate on forty places located in the rural South. The analysis demonstrates that both racial composition and other community characteristics such as spatial location, industrial structure, and educational level of the races have significant effects on the differential occupational opportunities of whites and blacks. The findings for rural locates diverge sharply from conventional theoretical expectations and from findings observed for metropolitan centers. These unique results are discussed and interpreted in light of sociological theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
