Abstrakt: INTRODUCTION: Meconium passage in newborn infants is a developmentally programmed event normally occurring within first 24-48 hours of birth. The meconium staining of amniotic fluid occurs in 12% of all live births per annum. The use of gastric lavage in MSAF babies has been advocated in many hospitals as a part of the conventional treatment without any supporting evidence. Therefore the investigator decided to study if gastric lavage reduces occurence of feeding problems in neonates born with meconium stained amniotic fluid. AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the effectiveness of gastric lavage in preventing feeding problems in neonates born with Meconium Stained Amniotic Fluid admitted in NICU, GGS Medical Hospital, Faridkot, Punjab. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quasi-experimental approach with non-randomized control group design was used. Conceptual framework for the study was adopted from Ludwig Von Bertalanffy (1968) General System Model. Through purposive sampling, total 60 subjects were enrolled for the study. 30 subjects were given gastric lavage immediately after birth whereas remaining were given only conventional care. Data was obtained by observation checklist and was analyzed and interpreted through the descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The result revealed that there was significant reduction in feeding problems after giving gastric lavage in experimental group. The independent t-test value was 6.1959 that is found to be statistically significant at p value <0.05 for feeding problems in experimental group. The study showed that there is no association of feeding problems with selected demographic variables. CONCLUSION: Gastric lavage is highly effective in preventing feeding problems in neonates born with meconium stained amniotic fluid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
