Abstrakt: Adolescent substance use is a major challenge facing the world today that has proliferated into a global health problem of epidemic proportions. The study sought to examine the patterns of substance use among adolescents in Gweru City. Using an analytical relational survey design, a questionnaire was administered to 372 high school students (age range= aged 14 to 20 years) selected using stratified random sampling. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages). Substance use was moderated by school location and gender. The frequency of substance use varies with substances, with alcohol being the most commonly used substance. A higher proportion of the adolescents had first contact with substances below the age of 10 at home and with peers. Future studies should be conducted with larger samples to increase the generalisability of the findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
