The article presents information on a case study of the printers and their unions in France and more particularly about their recent efforts to defend their privileged position in the face of counter veiling historical trends. After a brief analysis of the political economy of the printing sector which determines the field of action in which the printers find themselves, the author wants to look at the anarcho-syndicalism typical of their union organization and at how this contributed to at least the short term success of recent defensive strike actions. Scholars Harry Braverman, Stephen Marglin and numerous others have addressed the relationship between the concentration process and its effect on labor and labor relations. Their general thesis is that the constant search for increased productivity leads to progressively more reinvestment in fixed capital equipment capable of diminishing wage costs. In order to remain competitive, other enterprises in the sector are forced to follow suit and the decrease in job slots soon becomes generalized throughout the sector. |
