The article examines the problem of binary opposition and its resulting ethical implications in Susan Cooper's fantasy novel "The Dark Is Rising" by applying digital humanities methodologies. It maps and interprets Cooper's semantic field of "cold" and allied terms by exploring linguistic and cultural histories. It concludes that Cooper's approach to the binaries of warmth and cold, and good and evil are more complex in its metaphorical, political and moral levels than she has given credit for. |
