The article discusses asylum views within the context of postcards as a commercial enterprise and their meaning to the sender and receiver. These postcards have sparked the social science curiosity as well as our collecting zeal. There are scholars who approach pictures thinking that the only thing you can learn from them is how the people who produced them thought. The pictures of asylums on postcards represent just one way of depicting these institution. This genre of depiction embodies a particular form of visual rhetoric, the conventions of which have been described in this paper. The ornate and imposing buildings and the tranquility of the grounds dominate. There were other genres of depiction. While they presented a raise picture or what asylums had become, they made good subject matter for postcard views. Thus the images on the cards capture the ideal of the past, rather than the custodial enclaves they had become. This is important in trying to understand the impression asylum postcards might have given, or reinforced. |
