Abstrakt: This article focuses on the scope and definition of ecological restoration by the Society for Ecological Restroration. According to the balance-of-nature view, ecosystems are closed, internally regulated, in equilibrium with climate and relatively static when undisturbed. In this view, most human activity disturbs nature, but natural succession is capable of restoring equilibrium if the damage is not too great. Humans are seen as outside of nature, unless they are indigenous peoples - that is, the impact of hunter-gatherers is perceived to be "natural." Hence, the task of restoration in this model is to restore self-healing processes in an ecosystem that will lead to balance once more.
