This study analyzes Richard Powers’sThe Echo Makerto show how it uses a conventional mystery-story genre but also subverts genre expectations. The way the novel subverts generic expectations is to make the answer to the crucial mystery question both resolve and complicate the issues the story raises. The end of the novel clarifies what the story is about, but the meaning of the story remains open. The study then turns to unnatural narratology to address this unique situation, resulting in the conclusion that nonconventional works tend to be more realist (mimetic) than conventional works. That informs a consideration ofThe Echo Makeras a timely after-postmodern novel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
