Coal remains a primary energy source for the production of electricity. It is well established in most industrialized nations and rapidly growing in developing nations. World reserves for coal are abundant, with hundreds of years remaining. However, many problems exist in the areas of environmental, safety, and a retiring or insufficient workforce. These problems, coupled with the lack of renewable energy sources to meet baseload demand for power, will result in the ongoing need for new graduates. Universities have been slow to educate students in coal power generation. A solution to this is presented in this paper in the form of a lesson plan with introductory information of the coal power generation process, equipment utilized, and some of the policies and concerns surrounding coal use. This paper can serve to start a dialog in energy courses and provide future directions for students interested in pursuing energy careers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
