Abstrakt: PURPOSE: To underline the clinical signifi cance of the superfi cial thoracoepigastric vein's thrombophlebitis, known as Mondor‘s disease, which is a rare and painful thrombophlebitis with benign prognosis, that usually accompanies wounds of the chest wall (iatrogenic or not) and tumors of this body region (benign and malignant). It most commonly affects women and in a large percentage, is characterized as idiopathic, while there is a correlation with immunological diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present a case of Mondor's thrombophlebitis in a 47-year-old man, diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. Patient's monitoring revealed no breast disease, no chest or abdominal malignancy and no chronic infection or evidence of thrombotic disposal. A correlation between Mondor's thrombophlebitis and the patient's basic chronic disease is assumed and we give an overview of the literature. RESULTS: The patient was treated with NSAIDs and thrombophlebitis was cured within 2 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical signifi cance of Mondor's thrombophlebitis is that, despite the benign course, it may accompany coexisting malignancy and more specifi cally breast cancer. For the 50% of cases, which remain idiopathic, autoimmune diseases may be involved in the pathophysiology of the disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
