Abstrakt: An analytically-based, computationally simple methodology is presented for calculating the velocity components of air flowing normal and parallel to a pair of suspensions attached to an E-block in a hard disk drive. The analysis allows for arbitrary angular orientation of the E-block/suspensions unit and accounts for the flow blockage due to the portion of the E-block that penetrates the inter-disk space. It is found that, for fixed orientation angle and disk speed of rotation, the velocity component parallel to a suspension is constant and positive everywhere along its length. In contrast, the velocity component normal to a suspension is a decreasing linear function of its length, from base to tip, and can change sign. The ratio of normal to parallel velocity components shows that the latter is generally significantly larger than the former along the entire length of a suspension for practical operating conditions. The expressions derived should be of value to the industry for the analysis and improved design of E-block/suspensions units in hard disk drives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
