The divide that opened between German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland at the outbreak of the war in 1914 has become general knowledge in Swiss history. The assertiveness of this blanket knowledge is not proportionate to any detailed active knowledge.This contribution looks at five ballots that were carried out between 1914-1918, despite the fact that the Federal Government had been granted extensive powers. It takes note of their subject matter and the results and analyzes the comments published by the press on both sides of the divide. Until today the results of federal votes are scrutinized whether widely diverging or even opposite results prove the existence of this divide. Concerning the votes in the years 1914-1918 there is no trace of the divide, which indicates that it was reality in the press only - admittedly also a form of reality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
