The article discusses the history of community life in the Heygate estate in South London, England in 1974-2011. It illustrates the resilience of the community in the face of problems including material neglect, growing social disorder and turnover of residents. It draws on the testimony of 16 community members including the tenants, youth club leaders and the manager of a community inclusion project. It also looks at media portrayal and public perception on the privatization of social housing. |
