Two hundred and fifty patients with Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis (JPD) were studied in relation to the role of atopy and footwear. Two hundred and eighteen affected children were patch-tested to a standard battery of contact allergens and to a range of shoe and sock constituents. Positive patch-tests were found in only 9%. A control group of 172 normal children was also studied. JPD appears to be related to a high incidence of atopy (61% positive in personal or immediate family history), but a control group of children from a primary school also had a high incidence of atopy. No differences were found in the construction or type of shoe usually worn by affected children and controls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
