The article is a guide to skin biopsies and excisions. The cosmetic appearance of scars, the final product of surgical procedures on the skin, is often the most important aspect considered by patients. Dermatologists should be aware of certain basic principles in order to achieve the optimum result. Although the results of skin biopsies are not always satisfactory because the underlying condition may interfere with wound healing, excision, particularly of facial lesions, should ideally leave little noticeable scarring. Tumours can be removed either by excision or curettage, the latter usually giving acceptable cosmetic results with a cure rate for basal cell carcinomata comparable with excision. |
