Abstrakt: This article is a critical survey of Pakistani literature in English since 1947. Compared to other Postcolonial literatures emerging from various former colonies, Pakistani post- Independence writings lack that aura which is the hallmark of almost all such creative responses to the experience of colonialism. So what have been, and still are, the major concerns of Pakistani writers? Has Pakistan ever become a postcolonial state? Why most of the writers writing in English have shied away from writing within the framework of colonialism and have refused to link up with our imperial legacies? And how major problems of Pakistan as a state and nation have been reflected in its literature, especially that written in English. These questions are of topical value and, therefore, demand critical attention since Pakistani literature in English is gaining visibility in the international publishing industry as well as claiming critical globality during the last ten years or so.
