Abstrakt: The article discusses several issues related to sociology of India. In the last 30 years or so the contributions of an international community of scholars to the sociology-social anthropology of India have been impressive in both their scope and seriousness of purpose. Within the limits that have been imposed by the state of the art and several other considerations, not all of which have been academic in nature, the achievements also have been considerable. One of the positive characteristics of such an international enterprise should have been the widening of perceptions through the cross fertilization of ideas from different cultural backgrounds. Unfortunately this has not happened, at least not in the fullest measure. Indian sociologists have been the products of Western universities or their outposts in India and have remained rootless, being strangers equally to the Indian and the Western philosophical traditions. The need for a synthesis of the philosophical presuppositions of social science has been voiced by many scholars but no significant advances have been made mainly because the questions have not been posed properly.
