In the last decade global warming and consequent climate change have been heavily discussed, and several techniques have been developed to avoid its impacts. Technologies such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) are the state of art, and are used to remove the CO2 from the atmosphere permanently, therefore decreasing the emissions of Green House Gases (GHG) from power plants for the generation of energy. To have a clear idea of the environmental performance of such technologies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a powerful instrument. It allows us to compare the performance of different technologies in terms of several indicators, such as global warming potential, terrestrial acidification potential, and human toxicity potential among others. This paper is a review of several articles published during the last decade about the use of CCS technologies in coal and natural gas power generation, and their LCA. It presents the broad picture of the environmental performance and social acceptance of CCS technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
