Abstrakt: The articles in this issue investigate the history of development in so-called "underdeveloped" areas of the world in both the colonial and postcolonial period. Each essay situates political change in longer historical processes, analyzing global initiatives in the local contexts in which they were played out and probing the longue dureé of expert cultures, knowledge systems, and their global flows and regional adaptations. Methodological approach, thematic field, and regional focus are by contrast varied: the topics discussed here range from agricultural development and economics to nutrition science, political education, and psychiatry in settings as diverse as India, London, Guatemala, Beirut, and Ghana. The wider aim is to contribute to ongoing debates on the history of development, which we believe should be more directly connected with the history of colonialism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
