The article discusses method of discontinuing mechanical ventilator of patients with respiratory failure, known as weaning. It states ocurrance of complications in patients receiving invasive positive pressure ventilation like barotrauma, and mentions that the most appropriate method for determining the ability of patient to bear weaning is is to perform a spontaneous breathing trial. It notes use of the indication rapid shallow breathing index for deciding weaning. |
