There are two related problems in the Poetics: Aristotle's contradictory statements about size, and Aristotle's confusing use of two terms for size, peyeBoc; and pf|Koc;. I argue that both problems can be solved if we understand that Aristotle only uses pEyeSoc; to refer to the size of the plot in relation to the size of the larger whole, and pfjicoc; to refer to absolute size (number of lines, run-time, fictional time, or number of plot parts), unrelated to any larger whole.
