Abstrakt: The essential oil of Atractylodes chinensis (Compositae) rhizomes possesses contact toxicity against the adults of the booklouse, Liposcelis bostrychophila (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae), with an LD50 value of 104.70 μg/cm². Dried A. chinensis rhizomes were extracted using supercritical CO2 fluid extraction, and chromatographic separation on repeated silica gel columns led to the isolation of atractylodin, atractylodinol, β-eudesmol and atractylenolide III. Atractylodin (LD50 = 9.89 μg/cm2) demonstrated stronger contact toxicity against this pest than the other three compounds (LD50 ≥ 70.60 μg/cm²) and was twice as active the positive control (pyrethrum: LD50 = 18.99 μg/cm2). At a dose of 31.58 μg/cm², the essential oil, atractylodin and β-eudesmol strongly repelled against L. bostrychophila (92, 88 and 86%, respectively) for 2 h after exposure. The results indicate that atractylodin has the potential to be developed as natural insecticide and repellent for the control of L. bostrychophila. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
