The surface of a solid body, in terms of its total mass, takes up hardly a fraction but can influence its characteristic profile up to well-nigh 100 %. Titanium carbonitride coated drills can be drawn on here as a representative example which, without this surface treatment, would in no way achieve their present day service lives. In the case of modified glass panes the indoor climate can be decisively influenced by the degree of reflection or transmission of the incident light. Knowledge concerning the modification of surfaces is growing steadily and is taking on a key strategic position in the value creation chain. This article describes surface treatment by means of APCVD and CCVD with the focus on plasma coating at atmospheric pressure. In so doing, possibilities to create new composite coating systems in the nanometer range will be identified. Expanding the range of treatable substrates by textiles, completely new areas of application are being tapped and challenges presented which are also generating new areas of deployment for these in the same breath.
