Abstrakt: This paper takes a closer look at the diplomas of Louis the Child and intercession. Important is not only who was intervening, jointly with whom, and on what occasion, for the benefit of which recipient, significant is also who was not in need of intercession or did not consider it appropriate to be seen as beholden to an intercessor. Obviously royal charters were considered an essential feature of kingship and useful not only for the recipient but also for proclaiming an overall authority that was deemed necessary, regardless of whether it really existed or was just a cover for someone else’s exercise of power that otherwise would not have been generally accepted.
