An essay is presented about Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand coming to the U.S. It revisits the story of a group of Maori people brought to New York to participate in a performance twice daily for nine months at the Hippodrome from 1909 to 1910. The author argues that the Maori people's adaptive performance styles constituted expressions of cultural hybridity or transculturation. Also discussed are the interactions by the Maori with anthropologists and suffragettes. |
