Lithium disilicate glass ceramics are commonly used in dental crowns because of their optical and mechanical properties. Alternative materials, such as zirconia-silica glass ceramics, with improved mechanical properties may be of interest for more demanding applications. In this study, a sol-gel method was optimized to produce nano grain-sized glass ceramics based on the zirconia-silica system. The zirconia-silica glass ceramic was translucent and a higher fracture toughness could be achieved in comparison to lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD) via a proper heat treatment. In conclusion, a translucent glass ceramic system with promising mechanical properties was prepared by a sol-gel method, and has a good potential for dental applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
