Abstrakt: There is considerable interest gaining grounds on the role of various types of breathing exercises in the control of asthma. Breathing exercises may be in the form of pranayama, physiotherapy breathing exercises or buteyko breathing. Each of these techniques has claimed to benefit the asthmatics which have been seen with some scepticism from clinicians. But there are a number of research articles undertaken which show changes in asthmatics. This study was conducted to study the efficacy of respiratory physiotherapy breathing exercise on bronchial asthma where the lung function parameters were assessed. Fifty five subjects who were enrolled into the study were taught physiotherapy exercises in the form of diaphragmatic and pursed lip breathing. At the end of 6 weeks pulmonary function tests were conducted. Control group consisted of 35 subjects and were matched for age, gender and duration of asthma. Improvement was seen in the pulmonary function parameters at the end of 6weeks in the respiratory physiotherapy study group. Breathing exercises have shown that an improvement in the lung function can be recorded. In this study we have shown an improvement in these parameters after intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
