Abstrakt: The article examines the relationships and contexts that fostered civil rights activism by students at Howard University in the U.S. from 1934 to 1944. The role of student leadership can pressure institutional leaders to uphold the mission and role of a historically black university and promote the education that it offers. Also discussed are students' efforts to develop and test strategies to ensure the success of desegregating local businesses.
