A 29-year-old male labourer fell on iron rods at a construction site which pierced through his abdomen and thorax. One rod, 5 ft long, entered the left hypochondrium injuring the transverse colon, spleen and entering the thorax through the diaphragm going through the superior segment of the lower lobe of the left lung and further going through the upper lobe touching the lateral pericardial surface and coming out through the second intercostal space midclavicular line. Another rod, 3 ft long, pierced the left axilla, sparing the axillary vessels and major nerves. The rods were successfully removed along with superior segmentectomy and repair of upper lobe injuries. Abdominal injury required diaphragm repair, colon repair and splenectomy. The patient made an uneventful recovery without any sequelae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
