In Sarigiol basin, Western Macedonia, Greece, extended mining activity takes place for the exploitation of lignite deposits. Aquifers occur in the sandy layers of the overburden and the underburden of the lignite ones. Groundwater, which flows out from overburden, is considered as a representative natural-in situ leaching test. Water samples from such sites and from sumps were collected and analyzed. A detailed geochemical, petrological and mineralogical study of samples from overburden formations was carried out by means of optical microscopy, XRF, XRD and SEM/EDS. Then, the leaching potential in metal elements was determined by performing leaching tests applying the European Standard Leaching Test EN 124572. The results from the natural leaching and laboratorial tests indicate a low leaching potential. As a result all metals (-oids) in mine water samples are below the limits of the new Dutch list and Greek Ministerial Decision and mine water quality is generally acceptable and below recommended water quality standards.
