In this Research As Daily Practice inquiry, we studied the ways that we (as family therapists of varied experience levels) create our clinical understandings of family distress (what we call pathologizing interpersonal patterns or PIPs) and how we formulate our clinical pathways toward improved family functioning (what we call healing interpersonal patterns or HIPs). We collected conversational exchanges from focus groups at our agency and using a narrative inquiry approach wove them into three stories that depict processes used by family therapists to move from distinguishing problematic family patterns toward conceptualizing more helpful healing patterns.
