Abstrakt: The article presents literary criticism for the books "Arthur Mervyn" by Charles Brockden Brown and "The Last Man" by Mary Shelley. It informs that the novels are as much concerned with the recuperative power of writing, the authors of the novels promote novel-writing as an antidote against contagion and the novels offers contrast to Jack London's novel "The Scarlet Plague."
