The aim of this paper is to review the literature on music perception and cognition in the first year of life, and examine its contribution for other domains such as child development and music education. In the first part of the paper, previous research that focused on musical features such as pitch, melodic contour, scales, harmony, timbre, musical form and structure, rhythmic and temporal events, and long-term memory for music is examined. A thorough description of studies that investigated the uses of music in the everyday life of infants and their caretakers in contexts such as the home environment and therapeutic settings follows. The second part of the paper includes a critique of the previous and current literature, including a discussion of directions for future research. The implications of these studies for educators and therapists working with infants are included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
