Abstrakt: This article addresses teaching for skill and knowledge competency in high school based on the National Standards and grade-level outcomes. The outcomes guide teachers away from a curriculum that emphasizes competition through team sports, which appeals to just the highly-skilled and competitive students, toward one that is inclusive of all skill levels. A mastery climate is essential for cultivating competency and is important for physical activity engagement. In addition, choice in the curriculum is important for high school students, whose developing self-awareness of abilities shapes their interests. When planning and implementing instruction, high school teachers need to incorporate an assessment cycle to ensure that students are progressing toward skill and knowledge mastery. In particular, high school students need opportunities to develop and implement different types of physical activity and fitness plans in consultation with the teacher in order to have the confidence to do so once they graduate. Guidance on developing and assessing these plans will be provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
